      BOLA OBATUYI
Born in September 1992 in the city of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Who obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Fine Arts from Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, Nigeria in 2015/2017. She brings her canvases to life using fabric and acrylic paint. Passionate about the idea behind making new things from found materials, her artistic journey traces back to her early days in her aunt’s tailoring shop in Ibadan, Nigeria. From making doodles on the wall to crafting art with cardboard as a child.

Each work is made by hand through a laborious process that begins with template drawings and fabric-cutting and ends with pinning and sewing. She playfully riffs on traditional weaving patterns, colorful Africa Attires (though sometimes ripping apart old ones) that feature optical illusions, acid drips, and pixelated glitches. These works combine visual and written storytelling to explore topics such as the underrepresentation of African- Americans in art history.

Her art influenced by a range of artists both locally and internationally which include: Andy Warhol, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Bisa Butler, among others.

Bola Obatuyi combines fabric and acrylic paint to create a rich representation of the gentleness and the gift of feminity. Her work intercepts body positivity, sisterhood and defiance towards socially constructed notions around what it means to be female such as the misconception that physical attractiveness is the most important aspect of being a woman. Bola Obatuyi aims to use her art as a medium to show appreciation for women within Nigeria society and beyond.

      ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m expressing myself and embracing my femininity through my choice of material.
Using Ankara attires, waste materials and acrylic colours with oil is my greatest joy because I always want to use waste fabrics to create masterpiece, beauty and wealth. I believe we should create a dynamic expression in art and to others in life. Using art to promote African Cultures and as an eye opener for upcoming artists around the world, also, parents should allow their children to have the spirit of Art.
My sole aim is to find solutions to people's lives through my artistic ideology.
